                        GUIDING LIGHT UPDATE
                       TUESDAY, JULY 30, 1996

My apologies that this is so late--it's been quite a week. Meanwhile in
Springfield...

Cedars Hallway: Rick and Abby chat. He wants to fix the railing on her
apartment tomorrow and have coffee with her later today. Exit Rick and
enter Michelle. Abby's pleased Rick seems interested in her.

Shane's Hospital Room: He's asleep as Reva and Josh keep vigil. Shane
starts to awaken and Josh and Reva hug, observed by Annie and some helium
balloons outside the room.

Amanda's Hospital Room: Enter Rick to kick Amanda out of the hospital in
time for her court date. Enter Alex offering to accompany her. They
exchange snide remarks until Philip enters offering his financial help.

Spaulding Enterprises: Lucy has decided to find out who "A. Spaulding" is
so that Philip and Alan Michael can kiss and make up. Alan Michael nixes
that plan and launches into still another childhood story, this one
involving Philip stealing his baseball cards. Lucy's not convinced this
has anything to do with the situation now. Enter board member Taggart, who
has been summoned by Hyphen Boy. Lucy exits and Alan Michael tells Taggart
he won't stand for Philip working at Spaulding under any circumstances.

Lucy's Desk: Enter Zachary, who says Alan Michael has summoned him. Lucy
spills her guts about the "A Spaulding" situation.

Amanda's Hospital Room: Rick reiterates that Amanda has to clear out this
AM. She threatens to call Daddy Dearest, but Alex pipes up that he is
distancing himself from Amanda and her embarrassing situation, and won't be
coming today. Philip announces he has hired a tax attorney for Amanda,
despite Alex's assurances that it will make no difference to the IRS.
After more witty repartee, Amanda is wheeled away and Alex asks Philip why
he is being so nice to his sister. Not to worry, he assures her, he has a
plan.

Shane's Hospital Room: Enter Annie bearing balloons. Now it's Reva who's
uncomfortable, but Annie makes a great show of letting Shane know how
caring and wonderful his Momma was while he was sick. When Annie exits to
find a doctor for Shane, Reva thanks her for her graciousness, admitting
that Shane is closer to Annie than to her. Annie says they shouldn't keep
trying to "one-up" the other and that Shane needs all his parents. She
then exits quickly and pops more pills. Josh seems oblivious to the
emotional subterfuge in his life.

Cedars Hallway: Michelle and Abby ponder Rick and his emotional life
further. Meanwhile, in a nearby corridor, Annie continues her panic
attack. Down the hall the Spaulding entourage prepares for their final
departure. Philip pulls Rick aside to tell him the latest news about Neil
Everest being a client of Amanda's.

Lucy's Desk: Lucy and Zachary continue to debate whether Alan Michael
might have tried to do Philip in. She thinks they are just suffering from
sibling rivalry; Zachary suggests she try to figure out who had a motive
(i. e. $$$$$) for trying to get rid of Philip.

Alan Michael's Office: Taggart continues babbling about how nice it would
look to investors if Philip and Alan Michael would project a united front.

Lucy's Desk: Lucy decides to find out who paid Neil Everest to bring
Philip down.

Alan Michael's Office: Enter Zachary as Taggart exits. Using his best
(worst) Alan Spaulding prosecutorial style, AM grills Zachary about why
he's here and what he's doing. Zachary insists he restores lighthouses for
a living and that he contacted Ed months ago about restoring this one.
He'll stay here as long as "he has work to do" he adds mysteriously.

Spaulding Warehouses: Lucy requests all the family's personal financial
records. When the employee hesitates, she says with all this Amanda stuff,
she wants to make sure there are no more surprises. This seems to satisfy
the guard.

Outside Shane's Room: Reva is still worried about Annie and tries to
explain to Josh, who is being his usual dense self. Enter Buzz and shortly
after the doctor, who says Shane is asleep again and that they should all
go home and rest, too.

Cedars Hallway: As if Annie didn't have enough troubles, she has been
assigned to get release signatures from the abusive Amanda. Rick and
Philip continue chatting. Philip can tell Rick has woman troubles. Rick
admits he wants to get involved with someone that he had previously told
that he just wanted to be friends. Abby spies from a nearby corridor.
Rick jokes that the woman is a blond Amazon named Sharon Stone. Abby,
unaware of the humor, turns away and misses Rick's confession that the real
woman is Abby. Philip advises starting the relationship completely from
scratch, but before they can continue, Amanda shrieks that it's time to
leave. Abby's angry and hurt.

Alan Michael's Office: Zachary wants to know if AM is always so
suspicious. He then rhapsodizes about the quality of craftsmanship in AM's
desk (which Hyphen Boy has never noticed) and manages to steer the
conversation to fishing, finally calming Alan Michael down.

Spaulding Warehouse: The employee brings Lucy several banker's boxes of
records. She looks at Amanda's box first..

Spaulding Mansion: Enter Alex, Amanda and Philip, greeted by Misty
McCloud, two IRS men, and the attorney Philip hired. Since she has been
"ill" so recently, they have decided to have the hearing right there in the
Spaulding den. Amanda protests that she is weak, but the G-men won't be
deterred.

Cedars Hallway: Reva and Buzz kiss and exit. Enter Abby. Rick wants to
go for coffee now, but she puts him off. He's puzzled, but exits. Enter
Michelle and she and Abby discuss Abby's latest imagined romantic
obstacles.

Spaulding Den: Amanda continues swooning in protest, but the IRS men
suggest the most strenuous thing they will ask her to do is write a check.
They go over the charges and the attorney tries his best, but finally
Amanda admits she faked the books because she burned the real ones. Alex
pipes up to concur that she witnessed the conflagration; the attorney begs
her to shut up. During a short recess Philip quizzes Misty about Neal
Everest. Misty says he and Amanda were very tight and that Neal always got
the red carpet treatment. After the hearing resumes, the IRS declares that
Amanda owes $12 million.

Cedars Hallway: Josh thanks Annie for her earlier graciousness to Reva.
During an embrace Annie tightens at the mention of Reva's name. Josh wants
to make sure she's OK, and she insists she's wonderful. He exits for
Shane's room and Annie pops more pills. Rick wants to know why she needs
so many controlled substances if she is wonderful.

Spaulding Den: After the hearing the attorney promises an appeal. Amanda
thanks Philip for standing by her. He says she can always turn to him and
now he's giving her one more chance to tell the truth about Neal Everest.

Alan Michael's Office: Zachary tells Alan Michael he should take off an
afternoon and go fishing.

Spaulding Warehouse: Lucy's looking through canceled checks. She finds
one written to Neal Everest for $10,000.00--signed by Alan Michael. Freeze
frame on her shocked face.
