Guiding Light Update, RealWednesday, July 24, 1996

Boardinghouse Kitchen
Nola comes down to the kitchen an notices that Bridget is still wearing
last night's outfit. She comments that Bridget must not have gotten much
sleep last night. "Try none.", Bridget says. Nola wonders what happened.
"Oh, nothing, I just wanna kill him is all." Bridget responds. Nola
guesses correctly that the "him" is Hart. Bridget tells Nola that Hart has
been lying to her since day one.

Dinah's Bedroom
Hart walks in through the open French door (not very safe, Dinah) and
kisses Dinah awake. Dinah is at first very happy to see him, then reminds
him (and all of us) that they have to stay away from each other or they'll
end up in jail for plotting against Roger. Hart says they can't be
together in Springfield, but maybe somewhere else... he shows her a plane
ticket.

Spaulding Mansion
Alan is on the phone with the hospital, inquiring about Shayne. He's
relieved to know that Shayne will be OK. Amanda walks in and hands Alan
the morning paper. Alan is happy to see it because he's responsible for
the headlines. He shows Alex and Amanda (but not us) the paper. They look
shocked.

Meeting Room at Cedars
Rick is talking to Holly, Fletch, Viv, and some other man about Downs
Syndrome kids and possible respiratory problems. Reporters burst in
looking for Viv. They show her the headline (we still don't see it). Viv
is stunned.

Griff's Classroom
The paper is being passed between snickering students as Griff lectures.
He finally realizes that no one is listening, and asks what's so funny.
He'd like to see the paper. We finally see the headline as Griff reads it:
"PROMINENT CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER SEDUCES OWN DAUGHTER", with big pictures of
Griff and Gilly accompanying the article. Griff can't believe it.

Meeting Room at Cedars
Reporters badger Viv for a statement. She is speechless. Fletch tries to
get them to leave, but they just accuse him of wanting the scoop. Rick
pushes them away from Viv, but they won't leave till they get their
statement. Holly advises Viv to say something, and Viv agrees. "Griffin
Williams is the father of my daughter Gilly, but I categorically deny that
he ever tried to seduce her." A reporter asks if she's sure - his source
told him that Gilly was with Griff in a hotel room late at night. Viv
explains that Gilly was working for Griff, and Griff lives in the hotel
room. The reporter points out that hotel rooms have beds... Viv angrily
says "My daughter is a fine, upstanding young woman in the community. She
would not do what you are implying." The reporters ask more questions, but
Rick has had enough. He pushes the reporters out of the room with
Fletcher's help. Holly hugs Viv. Holly and Fletch want to help - they
wonder who told the story. Viv knows, and he's not going to get away with
it.

Spaulding Mansion
Alan is gloating. Alex thinks it's disgusting. Amanda says "So what, it
worked, didn't it?" Alex wants to know how Alan found out, but Alan won't
tell. Amanda discovers that "Shayne Lewis's little brush with death" is
buried on page 34. Their reputations and plans are intact. Alex feels
sorry for Viv. She's surprised that Amanda and Alan don't care that
they've ruined Viv's life. Alex knows Viv - they're in the same clubs -
and she's a fine and decent woman. "She's also an adultress and a liar",
Amanda replies. (I'd think Amanda would be more sympathetic, given that
her sordid past was just exposed in a similar manner.) Alex also thinks
it's a bad idea to cross a man as popular as Griffin Williams. Alan
doesn't see what's so wrong. "All I did was take the man down a few
notches." Alex predicts a backlash. Alan says Griff has already done his
worst - he accused Alan of blowing up a child for profit in front of the
new media. Griff has inflicted damage on Alan's business and his
character. Alan has done nothing to Griff that Griff hasn't already done
to Alan.

Griff's Classroom
Griff reads the paper with his back to the giggling students. A student
(supposedly the same one that came on to Griff earlier, but she looks
different to me) quizzes Griff about the article, and another student
defends Griff. Griff tells the class that this is what happens when you
fight money and the system. He doesn't want to say any more. He tries to
get back to his lecture, but the class won't let him. Griff gives up and
dismisses the class. Girl Student, talking to her classmates as she
leaves, says that Gilly is nothing special, and wonders what kind of a
creep would fall for his own kid. Gilly arrives as the students are
leaving. The kids hide their laughs behind their notebooks. After a
commercial break, Gilly stands among the students uncomfortably, till Griff
sends the kids away. Griff is glad to see Gilly. He asks how she is.
"It's not too bad considering my life exploded in my face.", she tells him.
Griff listens as Gilly says she's been trying to figure out how everything
blew up so fast. One day, she knew who she was, and what she wanted, and
the next day, poof! it's up in smoke, gone. Griff assures her it's NOT
gone. Gilly responds that her mother has lied to her her whole life. Griff
reminds her that Viv lied to both of them. Neither of them is sure how to
proceed with their relationship. Griff says he'd be thrilled if Gilly
wanted to get to know him as her father. They are both very emotional as
reporters burst in on them. Gilly is about to cry.

Dinah's Bedroom
Dinah is thrilled that Hart is going to the Cayman Islands with her. At
first, she's afraid they'll get caught, but Hart easily convinces her it's
OK. "I booked my own flight. Once we're down there, it's just you, me and
the fish." They cuddle and talk about what they'll do when they get there.
They talk about how the couldn't have pulled any of this off without each
other. Hart leaves just as Vanessa comes in. Dinah excitedly spills that
Hart is going to the Caymans with her. Vanessa thinks that's the worst
idea in the world.

Boardinghouse
Bridget tells Nola what she did and saw last night, and Nola tries to make
her feel better. "Why are men such jerks?", Bridget asks. "It's genetic",
Nola replies. Bridget says the "old her" would come up with some scheme to
get Hart, but that was before. Bridget and Nola talk each other into not
wanting men that don't want them - Nola tells Bridget about her "trying to
trap a man" fiasco with Kelly Nelson. They assure each other that Mr.
Rights are out there somewhere for both of them. Nola has to go to work,
Bridget thanks her for the talk. Peter comes toddling in - he's thirsty.
Bridget picks him up, and notices that he's warm. "Good Lord you get hot
out there. If I didn't know better I'd think you were..." She gets a
scheming look on her face, and says to herself, Bridget, Stop, you can't do
that...The look deepens into a sly smile, and she asks Peter if he'd like
to play a new game called SICK. Peter happily agrees. Bridget calls Hart
in a panic - there's something wrong with Peter! "Can you come over right
away?", she asks. She hangs up and laughs to herself.

Meeting Room at Cedars
Holly berates Fletch for not being more sympathetic with Viv. Fletch says
she has no one to blame but herself. She shouldn't have lied. Rick, as he
reads the paper, says he'd better go warn Charles. Holly says everyone's a
victim, including Viv. Holly wants the Journal to run something positive
to counteract the trash. Before they head off to the Journal, they talk to
Rick about a new treatment for DS kids call Nutritional Stimulation. Holly
wants to try it with Meg. Rick is reluctant to recommend a new, unknown
treatment. He suggests that Holly and Fletch attend the National Downs
Syndrome Congress, conveniently meeting in Miami this weekend, to talk to
other parents and find out more. Holly and Fletch decide to go. Fletch
makes Holly promise to stay with the tried and true till they know more.

Griff's Classroom
Reporters are badgering Griff and Gilly with questions. Gilly hasn't seen
the paper, and she doesn't know what's going on. A reporter show her the
headline, and asks for a statement. Gilly is hurt and speechless.

Spaulding Mansion
Alex points out that Shayne's story is on the front page of the legitimate
paper, the Journal. They wouldn't print Alan's trash. Alan doesn't care.
The papers people read, the tabloids, printed the story. Alan's point is
clear: "Griffin Williams won't be the moral arbiter of anything anymore."
Alex warns him not to underestimate Griff. As Alan starts to respond, Viv
pushes her way past the maid, walks up to Alan an slaps him. "You betrayed
me!", she says angrily. Viv lays into Alan about his betrayal. Amanda
wants to call security, but Alan stops her. He can handle it. He tries
unsuccessfully to calm Viv down. She wants to know if he even thought
about Gilly or Charles. Alan has made them the object of ridicule. Alan
apologizes if he's hurt Viv, but he only did what she wanted him to do - he
brought Griffin Williams down. Viv concedes that she wanted to hurt Griff,
but not like this. "What better way", Alan asks, "than proving that
Griffin Williams can't be trusted, even by his own child?" Alan is sorry
that Gilly and Charles have to pay the price for Viv's affair, but that's
not his problem. He's not to blame. Viv says he's made it a thousand times
worse. Alan points out that Viv should have thought about her family
before she had the affair. Alan is sure Gilly and Charles will get over
this "little embarrassment", but Griffin Williams' life is over. He'll
never be taken seriously again.

Griff's Classroom
Gilly is understandably upset. She wants to know how anyone could print
such a vicious lie. She wants to know who the source is. She's coming
close to threats when Griff hustles her out of the room.

Dinah's Bedroom
Dinah is in love. Dinah and Vanessa talk about Hart and her trip. Dinah
thinks Hart loves her, but he hasn't said it yet. Vanessa reminds her to
be careful, or they could go to jail. (We get it already.) Vanessa
promises not to interfere, Dinah promises to be careful. There's more
bonding. Dinah is packing, but she doesn't want to take anything that
reminds her of Roger. Vanessa gives Dinah a sexy swimsuit to take. "Matt's
going to be disappointed", Dinah says. "But Hart won't", Vanessa replies.
Dinah is very excited as she leaves for the airport. Vanessa is worried.

Boardinghouse
Bridget is giving Peter last minute "SICK" game instructions when Hart
arrives. Peter plays the game well, and Hart is convinced. Hart thinks
they should call the doctor. Bridget dials with her finger on the
switchhook, and describes Peter's "symptoms" to the dialtone. She hangs
up, and tells Hart they're supposed to give him a bath, acetaminophen, and
watch him. Sounds good to Hart. Bridget says it would be fine, but she
can't. Company is full of workmen, and she's got to get ready for the
re-opening. Bridget asks Hart to stay and watch Peter. Hart tells her he
would, any other time, but he's got to catch a plane. Bridget lays on more
guilt about Hart preferring Dinah to Peter. Finally, he agrees to stay.

Airplane
The flight attendant brings Dinah some champagne. She's got a lot to
celebrate. She remembers making love with Hart in various different places
and times. "He loves me. He has to love me.", she says softly to herself.

Boardinghouse
Hart is playing catch with Peter. Bridget tells Hart he can go, but he
insists that he's staying. He's not going to be like his father, and run
out on the people who care about him. Bridget thanks him for staying.
Hart makes a call to the hotel in the Caymans to leave a message for Dinah
that he'll be on a later flight.

Griff's Hotel Room
Griff and Gilly arrive. Gilly is uncomfortable being there, and Griff
apologizes for bringing her there. Gilly assures him it's OK. She's got
to deal with all this sometime, it might as well be here. Griff tells her
that what happened is their business, and they will deal with it. Gilly
thanks him for rescuing her in the classroom. They discuss who could have
given the papers the story, and conclude it must have been Viv. Shortly
thereafter, Viv arrives.

Meeting Room at Cedars
Rick is putting away folding chairs (doesn't Cedars have a housekeeping
staff?) when Vanessa arrives. Rick scolds her for not having the CAT scan.
Vanessa apologizes, says she thought she was doing better, but she had
another dizzy spell this morning. She'd like to take the test ASAP. She
looks scared.

Airplane
Dinah is arriving in the Caymans. "Romance, here I come", she says to
herself.

Boardinghouse
Hart and Peter are eating ice cream. Bridget comes in and asks how they
are. Hart takes Peter up to have a bath. Bridget, using re-dial, calls
the hotel back and pretends to be Dinah. She picks up Dinah's message from
Hart. Nola, carrying two large laundry baskets, catches Bridget at the end
of the phone call, and accuses Bridget of being up to something. Freeze on
Bridget's guilty face.
