Update for RealFriday, July 18, 1996

Prologue
Cedar's Emergency Waiting Room
Abigail's Mom is upset at the site of her daughter and Rick. Rick tells her
not to treat Abby like that, but Mom just tirades on about how Abby is
living in sin.

Springfield Police Holding Cells
Buzz and everyone goes on about their day's events: storming Alan's house,
the look on his face when they threatened to build a shanty town on his
lawn. Annie is in the background, worriedly watching Reva and Josh
together. Buzz finally spots Annie and invites her in. Annie says she's
there to bail out Josh. Reva panics and says that Josh can't leave (now
Buzz looks worried too).

Meals and Wheels Diner
Elainie doesn't believe that Shane is at the construction site. She asks an
incoming Daliha if Shane was upstairs with her. Daliha denies. A near
panic Alan asks Marah when's the last time she seen her brother. Marah
recalls when they were outside the Condemned building, looking for their
folks. Alan shoots out of the Diner, with Elanie in tow, to try to stop the
demolition. Elanie orders back to Daliha to keep Marah at the Dinner.

Condemned Building
Shane is paying in one of the abandoned rooms, when he hears "Fire in the
hole! Ready to Blast!" Amanda and the Foreman gear up, Alan comes running
up trying to stop them, but the Foreman pushes the button as a horrified
Alan watches the building blow.

OPENING CREDITS

Demolished Building
The Foreman berates Alan for just running up there, when Alan tells them
there was a boy inside the building. The Foreman and Amanda doesn't believe
them, and trying to tell Alan that Buzz and Reva have smoke screened him
again. But Elanie shows up and backs up Alan's story. Alan tries to climb
through the rubble in search of Shane, but the Foreman stops him, saying
that if he goes in there, whatever is still standing will rain down on him.
Alan calls for Shane, asking if he's okay and if he can hear Alan. After a
tense pause, Shane's crying can be heard.
Alan: "Oh my god, he's alive."
Shane calls for his father.

Holding Cell
Reva tries to back peddle once she realizes how she sounded. She wants Josh
to stay for the cause, and Buzz kicks in to defend her statement. Josh
thinks they are giving him too much credit, but Marcus confirms their
statement but having such a predominant, successful, respected businessman
on their side, in jail, only helps their cause all the more. Josh and Annie
kiss goodbye as an almost jealous Reva and a worried Buzz watches.

Spaulding Enterprises, President's Office
Alan-Michael and Lucy walk in, apologizing for being late. Alex says that no
apologies are needed and AM greets Glenn, the Board Member. Alex praises AM
for his work at Spaulding, how he's helped the company grow; AM plays down
Alex's compliments and wants to cut to business. Glenn is concerned about
Spaulding's reputation since AM revealed Amanda's past, since only weeks
earlier to that event, Spaulding did a great big press release about AM
offering Amanda a position at Spaulding; Glenn thinks it goes against the
Spaulding motto, "Family working for Families" (did anyone else find this
motto just WAY too funny?). AM says that Amanda doesn't work for Spaulding
but for his father. AM also thinks the motto still stands. Glenn doesn't
agree, and thinks the motto could use a little reinforcement. And Glen
thinks AM could use some help. Lucy defends AM's work, and Glenn counters
that the Board has asked someone to join them in their meeting. Glenn opens
the office door to show Phillip waiting in the outer office (did anyone else
cringe when you saw Phillip?).

COMMERCIAL BREAK

Holding Cell
Amanda shows up and informs the police to let the protesters out. She then
informs Reva and Josh that Shane was in the building when they blew it up.
Reva attacks Amanda, but Josh and Buzz intervene when Amanda says Shane is
alive and trapped in the rubble. Everyone takes off for the demolition site.

Ceder's
Rick is trying to get Mom to calm down, but Mom pushes Rick out. Amanda
signs to Rick, and Mom goes insane that she cannot understand what her
daughter is saying. Rick tell Mom that Abby is no longer a little girl from
Goshen, but a woman now and she should treat her that way. Abby signs to
Rick again, and Mom gets upset because she cannot understand ASL. Rick
informs Mom that Abby wants to speak to her alone; Rick signs that he'll be
in the next room if Abby should need him. Mom asks Abby if she remembers
their home sign. Vocally, and for the first time for her Mother, Abby says,
"Yes. I do." Mom is shocked, needless to say. Abby looks for Mom's
approval about her voice, and Mom side steps the issue by asking where Ed
is. Abby says Ed out of country, doing doctor work. Mom is shocked that
Abby called him Ed and wants to know where her respect of the Elders has
gone. Abby says that Ed is also her friend, and that she does respect him.
With Ed gone, Mom wants to know where Abby is staying. Abby says at the
Bauers still. Mom goes nuts thinking Abby is living with Rick, and that
Rick has seduced Abby (not without a bottle of Jack at least!). Abby tells
her mother that she is not only dishonoring Rick, but herself as well. Mom
says that her eyes don't lie; Abby says that she doesn't lie. Abby informs
her mother that she is in the wrong and that Mom must respect her.

In the examination room, Rick is going over a patient's chart as Annie comes
in muttering "The Cause's" reasons for having Josh stay in jail. Rick
interrupts, and Annie apologizes. Rick points out that when they were
married that Annie never had to bail him out. Annie smiles at Ricks'
attempt a humour, and says that Josh didn't want to get bailed out--for the
cause. Rick comments on her tension, Annie counters that she's not going to
suck down a bottle of pills (damn!). Rick says she's being defensive, and
Annie says she wouldn't have to be if Rick didn't hound her. We are saved
from this old, tired argument by another trauma nurse coming in and
announcing that the trauma team is needed because someone is strapped inside
a demolished building. Rick and Annie grab their equipment, and out they go!

Demolition site
The fire and police have arrived (lights are flashing and sirens still going
off). Alan and Elanie are telling Shane that everything is going to be
okay. Alan promises to get Shane out. Shane says he's scared and Alan says
he has to be brave. Shane looks really trapped and really hurt. Reva and
Josh arrive on the scene, and Alan and Buzz have to really fight to keep
Josh from going in. Shane sounds a little perkier when he hears Josh, which
drives Josh and Reva to tears when they hear his voice from inside the rubble.
Understatement of the day! Griffen: "Whoa! This is bad."
The Foreman informs everyone at the site that the only way to get to Shane
is by picking through the site piece by piece. Alan tells the crowd to do
as they are instructed, that no one should try and be the hero.
Josh: (growling, out of breath) "ALAN! If anything happens to my son, I'll
kill you."
Alan looks worried.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

Outside the Diner
With all the sirens and lights, Daliha wants Marah to come back inside.
Marah wants to know what is happening to her brother. Daliha says they find
out as soon as someone knows. Just then, the phone rings. The two run back
inside, and Daliha answers. After a few "uh-huhs" and "okay", she hangs up.
Marah wants to know what's going on. Daliha tells her it was Elanie. Marah
wants to know if they found Shane. Daliha stammers and says that
everything's going to be okay. Marah accuses Daliha of lying and runs back
out side. Daliha tells Marah that lying is wrong, but sometimes adults lie
to protect children. Marah says she can handle the truth. Daliha tells her
that Shane was in the building when it blew, and he's probably hurt, but
they're going to get him out. Marah wants to know if Shane is crying.
Daliha says she doesn't know, but that Marah's parents want Marah to stay
with Daliha. Marah blames herself, and Daliha hugs her.

Demolition site
Alan: "Josh, you can kill me later. Let's get your son out."
Josh goes after Alan, but Reva hugs him. Rick and Annie shows up and want
to know who's hurt. Josh tells Annie that it's Shane. Rick wants to know
if they've spoken with him. Josh says yes, a few words, crying and
whimpering (from who, you or the kid?). Elanie goes into self-blaming mode,
but Frank won't let her. Annie freaks out, but Rick calms her down,
reminding her of her job. Rick wants Annie to ask Shane some questions to
find out his condition. Annie goes over to Josh and Reva, but can't ask.
She has Reva do it. Annie has Reva tell him to answer yes or no. Shane
tells them he can breathe okay, but that he's cut (not real bad) on his
head's and legs. He can move his fingers, but doesn't answer when they
question about his toes. Reva bribes Shane into answering with the largest
amusement park, and Annie has Reva bribe him with a Rocket kit that he
wanted if he only answers. Of course, the kid being no fool, answers that
he can wiggle his toes. Rick wants Reva to ask if he's feeling sick. Shane
says a little. Rick thinks that he's either lost too much blood or has head
trauma. Annie tells Reva that Shane needs to stay awake. Rick says that
they are going to loose Shane if he's not out of there soon.

Spaulding Enterprise's
AM is not happy to see Phillip and tells Glenn so. AM points out that
Phillip has no stock in the company and that he doesn't need any help.
Glenn says all that can change. Phillip says that this was a surprise, as
does Alex. (What was the deal with Lucy through this scene? She kept
looking at Phillip like he was dirt. I just wanted Alex to reach over and
slap her) AM points out that it wouldn't do the company's rep any good by
hiring a man who just finished 5 years of community service. Glenn tries to
push it, but Phillip tells Glenn to forget, that AM have already discussed
this and AM has already turned him down. Glenn threatens to talk to the
Board, and AM calls his bluff by saying that the board cannot hire or fire,
not at the level Phillip would be considered (hmmmm......does that include
the Presidency, AM?). The phone rings, Lucy answers. Lucy informs everyone
that there has been an accident at Alan's demolition site and that Shane
Lewis is hurt. Everyone takes off.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

Ceder's
Mom wants to know what has happened to Abby, why she has turned her back on
their way of life. Abby says that she believes God did not intend for her
to stay in Goshen. Mom tries to counter with biblical ideals, and Abby
counters nicely, showing her mother that she hasn't forgotten where she came
from or who she really is, to the point where her mom has to tell her that
it would have been better if Abby had never found her voice (Ouch!). Abby
says she wakes up every morning feeling good about herself, being proud and
grateful. Mom says that pride is a sin.
Abby: So is false humility. Our gifts came from God. And if we use them
well, we can be proud. You taught me that.
Mom says that Abby refuses to see what she has lost, and Abby states that
Mom refuses to see what she has gained. Mom accuses Abby of flaunting
herself in front of Rick Bauer (obviously, Mom hasn't met Blake yet, has
she? Or seen Reva since her return to Springfield?). Abby says that he is
a friend. Abby says that she believes God did not intend for her to stay in
Goshen speaking only to her mother and through her mother. It's what Mom wants.

Demo Site
Everyone is moving rubble out of the way as Josh and Reva talk to Shane.
Annie debates where or not to down some pills, but stops herself. Alan
wants more men to move faster. AM attacks Alan, but Alan tells him to get
in line to help and that they'll talk later. Phillip concurs. OF COURSE,
Lucy spots Zachary and wants to know why he's here. Zachary "heard" that
someone was in trouble, and Lucy fills him in. Just then Buzz yells for
everyone to get back, it's going to go! Zachary moves past the crowd and
walks into the rubble, despite the obvious electrical noises. Everyone
yells at him to stop, but he moves on back through the building and finds a
trapped Shane and reaches down to him.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

Outside Diner
Marah is still trying to blame herself, and Daliha refuses to let Marah do
that. Daliha tells Marah that Shane is going to be okay.

Demo site
Shane wants Zach to get him out, and Zach says he can't do that by himself.
Zachary tells him that help will be there soon as the whole town is working
to get him out. Shane recognizes Zach from the Carousal with Vanessa.
Zachary tells Shane to think about the Carousel or shooting out there on a
Rocket. Reva ask that who's ever in there if he's with her son. Zach says
that he is, but he can't get him out alone.

Rick wants to go in and get Shane out and yells to Zach to tell him where he
is. Zach tells him; Reva looks scared to Josh and they hug.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

Ceder's
Abby says that she is still Mom's daughter, and that Goshen is a wonderful
place and life, but that she doesn't believe that God called her to stay
there. It's a good life for her mom, but Springfield is a good life for
her. Abby believes God gave her her voice and that he meant her to use it.
Mom asks if that means Abby will not come back to Goshen with her.
Tearfully, Abby didn't think she had to make a choice. Mom says if she
choices this life, Abby may not return to Goshen ever, that she will no
longer have a daughter; that she is duty bound to tell the elders. That
Goshen will shun her. Painfully, Abby choose Springfield and Mom begins to
leave. But before she goes, Mom turns to Abby and tells her no matter what,
Abby will always be her daughter. They hug. Mom says she loves Abby.

Outside Diner
Daliha sings to Marah about God being there for everyone (man, she can
sing!). As the Daliha continues to sing, we go back the construction site,
everyone working hard to move the rubble. And we see Zachary holding on to
Shane's hand, but Shane's hand slips, and we see Shane pass out.

FREEZE FRAME ON JOSH HOLDING ANNIE AND BUZZ HOLDING REVA AND REVA AND ANNIE
HOLDING HANDS.
