GUIDING LIGHT UPDATE -- THURSDAY, JULY 18, 1996

                     I FEEL THE EARTH MOVE...

Written by Sharon Epstein and directed by Irene M. Pace

Highlights:
* Annie gives Rick the cold shoulder.
* Blake's advice gives Abby a rush.
* Griffin & Vivian hurl vicious accusations & blame.
* The 5th St. protesters fill the jail with bad jokes & worse singing.
* Alan bullheadedly rams onward with his demolition plans.
* Marah & Shayne prove that Lewises can be stupider than Coopers.

CEDARS: At the nurse's station, Annie greets Rick coldly as "Dr. Bauer."
Rick wishes she'd quit the formality, which is obviously her way of
showing she's pissed at him about commenting on her use of a controlled
substance without consulting an AA sponsor. Annie tells him its none of
his beeswax, & points out that he's no saint, having slept with his
dad's best friend's wife. Rick says Blake has nothing to do with this,
just as Blake & Ross enter. Ross wonders what they're talking about.

POLICE HEADQUARTERS: Griffin & Gilly are having it out in an office.
Griff can't believe Viv is blaming him for the fact that she lost her
husband & her daughter. He thinks she's lost all her heart. She accuses
him of destroying her marriage & her future. "Your lies destroyed our
daughter's life!" replies Griff.

Out in the main area, bedlam reigns. The arrested protesters from 5th
St. are roaming around, being loud & annoying. Levy's trying to act
tough, but is having a hard time of it, since Buzz & his cohorts are so
amusing. Levy wants the protesters to form two lines--men on the left,
women on the right. Marcus does a hysterical pantomime indicating that
he's not sure which line he belongs on, ending up looking like the
Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz (or should I say, The Wiz). Josh can't
tell his right from his left & everyone else keeps moving back & forth.

Buzz takes over & tells everyone to hold hands. They form a big circle.
"Everybody circle to your left!" he calls, then sends them in the
opposite direction. Josh uses this distraction to hand Reva his cell
phone. She hunkers down behind a desk & surreptitiously calls Eleni at
the diner to let Eleni know she & Buzz will be late for their shift & to
make sure that Marah & Shayne will be looked after. She wants Mary to
know that she'll have to watch the kids til Annie gets back from work,
but Eleni says the kids are with her because Mary wasn't feeling well,
upstairs watching TV. She agrees to look after them until Reva & Josh
can get free. Reva hangs up & starts to rejoin the gang, but not before
Nell gives her a friendly signal to turn over the phone. Reva gives it
up with a sheepish smile & apologizes to Josh for getting caught.

5TH STREET: Alan goes over some final checkpoints with the demolition
crew. They've conducted a room-to-room search. Amanda says everything's
ready to go. The buildings will be down in less than an hour. Alan
smiles, "Buzz Cooper can make all the noise he wants, but it won't drown
out the sound of buildings falling down." He takes Amanda's arm & tells
her the next sound she hears will be the sweet sound of crushed dreams.
The Spauldings & crew walk away as Marah & Shayne show up, looking for
their parents. Marah knows they were arrested, but her childish logic
leads her to believe that they must be somewhere in the area. She sees
the cordoned off building & guesses that their parents are inside. She &
Shayne slip past the yellow tapes.

After a brief inspection of the building, which yields no Josh or Reva,
Marah suggests checking around the back. The kids run off just before &
Alan & crew return. Alan's annoyed because the fire marshal hasn't
arrived yet. Frank arrives in uniform to tell Alan that he has to come
down to the station to press charges against the trespassers. Alan wants
to do it later, but Frank says if he doesn't do it now, everyone will be
released. Alan goes, leaving Amanda in charge.

POLICE STATION: Viv says Gilly will bounce back just like she always
does. Griff is steamed big-time. How could Viv have kept the truth from
him & from Gilly, knowing that Gilly had a crush on Griff?! Viv says he
promised he wouldn't touch her & she had her reasons for not telling.
Griff sees it from Gilly's point of view. "Do you have any idea how much
damage your lies have done?!" He says none of this would have happened
if she had told the truth back when she was pregnant with Gilly. She
reminds him that he wouldn't commit to her, but he points out that he
didn't have all the information he needed. Viv says he never would have
accepted the baby--he only had room in his life for The Cause. She
insists she made the only choice that she could--the choice that was
right for her daughter. Griff says she's lying again.

CEDARS: Rick says he was telling Annie that he didn't think Blake would
participate in the 5th St. protest because of her condition. Annie goes
along with this little prevarication. Blake says she's not feeling well.
Ross explains about the stress she went through at Roger's hearing. They
all go into an exam room & continue the conversation. Rick has heard
about Roger's breakdown, but asks Ross to clarify some of the details.
Ross says Rog will be institutionalized for 90 days while the doctors
decide what to do about "whatever mental capabilities he has left."
Everyone sympathizes with Blake. Rick says Blake seems to be fine. He
just wants to run a few tests to be sure. Blake suggests that Ross go
deal with the police & the protesters in the meantime. Annie asks Ross
to give Josh her love. Ross tells Rick to take care of Blake.

POLICE STATION: Levy yells to be heard above the milling protesters.
"We're going to go downstairs & we're going to go QUIETLY!" "What was
that? I can't hear you," says Josh. Levy yells some more as Reva tries
to smooth his feathers. The protesters head for the stairs, but Alan
shows up & they rev up again. Levy calls for more cops.

CEDARS: Annie brings in a wheelchair & Rick says Blake checked out fine.
Rick is sorry to hear about what Blake had to go through with Roger. He
knows how difficult this all must be for her. Annie sympathizes too.
Rick says Blake did the right thing because Roger needs help. Annie
agrees. Blake says it was just so hard to see everyone laughing at Rog,
when all he ever wanted was respect. Rick observes that no one has a
choice of fathers. "It's the biggest crap shoot there is." This hits
home for Blake, who changes the subject. "How's your love life?" she
asks Rick. She thinks he needs a woman. Rick tells her to mind her own
business. Annie departs to do some work.

Rick & Blake debate the merits of bachelorhood. Blake calls it a "deep
abyss" that needs to be conquered. Rick is happy in his abyss. Abby
enters with some files for Rick. He compliments her on how she looks.
Abby smiles & Blake watches with keen interest.

POLICE STATION: Griff & Viv continue to argue about whether or not she
should have told him about Gilly & what he would have done had he known.
Viv claims he didn't want to know. Griff says she never gave him a
chance. He says she made all her choices out of selfishness. He insists
he would have loved Gilly & rues all the "firsts" he missed. Viv sneers
at this, & comments sarcastically on what a great father Griff was to
Marcus. "The only thing you ever loved was your precious Cause." Griff
says Viv was afraid of losing her safety net. Viv claims Charles never
turned his back on her. "But you sure stabbed him in it, didn't you?"
replies Griff. "You kept your money, your status, your personal life...
You stole the truth from all of us!"

Out in the main room, Levy takes Alan to sign the complaint. Viv storms
out of the office & tells Alan & Levy that she hopes they put Griff away
for as long as legally possible. Then she exits, fuming.

Reva starts mouthing off at Alan for the benefit of the cameras that
have arrived. She says no one will live in the town he builds. Alan
gives a PR spiel about not wanting to limit people's right to free
expression, yada, yada, while Reva calls him a "stinky rat" & makes
devil's horns behind his head. Ross arrives & sticks his hand over the
videocamera. Alan offers to drop all charges if the protesters will stay
off his property. Ross urges his clients to consider this, but they
aren't interested.

5TH ST: Amanda says the fire marshal has arrived. They're just about
ready to go. The adults walk off as Marah & Shayne reappear, still
looking for their parents. Shayne complains of thirst, so Marah tells
him to go back to the diner for a drink. She's going to look around some
more & tells Shayne to come back after his drink if he wants. She looks
around some more, and while her back is turned, Shayne sneaks into the
cordoned-off building. Marah walks off in another direction.

POLICE STATION: Josh refuses to sell out to Alan. Buzz says if Alan
doesn't press charges, Buzz plans to head right over to the Spaulding
front lawn with a load of 2x4s, where he will build a shantytown for all
the people left homeless by Alan's dastardly deeds. "We will bathe in
your goldfish pond. We will make herbal tea from your exotic flowers. We
will build bonfires in your driveway & sing Beatles tunes... like All
You Need is Love & We Can Work It Out." "How about The Fool on the
Hill?" suggests Alan. The crowd applauds for Buzz & backs him up 100%.
Alan says he's going ahead & signing the complaint. Marcus says as soon
as they make bail, they'll be back to haunt Alan. Alan doesn't care,
since the demolition will be over by then. Reva says they'll come after
him anyway. Alan says they should give it up already. Griff says never.

Griff tells Reva that Alan may be smirking on the outside, but he's
sweating bullets inside. The protesters lock arms, sit down & start
singing "We Shall Not Be Moved," off-key and too slow. Alan glares.

CEDARS: Rick tells Abby she did a great job with the files & thanks her
again. Abby says she loves her job. She goes back to work & Blake
comments on how sweet Abby is. She wonders what kind of guy would go for
Abby, because Abby deserves someone really special. Blake speculates
that the guy would have to be very warm & who likes kids. Rick agrees
with this. Blake says the guy would also have to be very down-to-earth.
A real Dr. Right. Rick tells her to quit matchmaking. Blake thinks Rick
is reading too much into what she's saying. Did she suggest that Rick
should date Abby? Rick tells her to stop pushing. Rick says Abby is very
nice, but she's just a friend. He goes to get some vitamins for Blake.

Annie returns & Blake notices she's ticked at Rick & hopes it's not be-
cause of her; Rick has been great lately. Annie says it's not that.
Blake feels guilty about lying to Rick about his baby. Annie deduces
that Blake wants to fix Rick up with a nice, fertile woman to assuage
this guilt. Blake freely admits this & heads out to work on Abby.

5TH ST.: Marah wanders around dejected, finally sitting on the condemned
building's stoop. Alan & the crew spot her & rush over. She explains
that she was looking for her parents. Alan tells the crew to stop the
countdown. They rush off & Alan, agitated, asks Marah why she didn't pay
attention to all the Keep Out signs. Marah hangs her head & apologizes
for being bad. Alan says it's OK; he's just glad they found her in time.

Inside the building, Shayne is having the time of his life. He explores,
finding everything incredibly "cool."

CEDARS: Blake thinks Abby looks fantastic & wonders if she gets asked
out on a lot of dates. Abby frowns & says no one has ever asked her for
a date. She's never been on a date. But 5 or 6 men did ask if she wanted
coffee. But she doesn't like coffee, so she said no. Blake explains that
asking someone out for coffee *is* a date. Abby wonders why people don't
just say so. Blake says it's a code, an excuse. If the couple ends up
not liking each other, then it was only coffee, not a date, and no one's
feelings get hurt. Abby finds this very strange. "But if you both like
the coffee, then other stuff can happen," continues Blake. "Yeah," sighs
Abby, "But I *don't* like coffee." Blake says Abby should pretend &
she'll learn to love it. Abby thinks this is dishonest. "Not if you both
know what coffee really means. Then you're both speaking the same
language," explains Blake. "English, right?" asks Abby.

Blake asks if Rick was one of the guys who asked Abby out for coffee.
Yes, says Abby. Blake is delighted. She tells Abby that the next time
Rick makes this offer, Abby should accept. "But I don't..." starts Abby
stubbornly. Blake tells her to order tea. Abby indicates that she gets
this part of it, but she doesn't think Rick is interested in her as a
potential date. Blake insists that he is. Abby says they're just good
friends. But he asked you out for coffee, counters Blake. Abby concedes
this point. Blake says by the time they're done, Rick will be buying
Abby a 4-course meal with dessert. Abby smiles.

Annie tells Rick that she's taking her lunch break & going to check on
Josh. Rick tells her again to cut out the formal nonsense. Annie asks if
he's going to mind his own business. Rick says he's just worried about
her. Annie is tired of him bossing her around. She's taking the drug as
prescribed & she resents his lack of trust. She leaves.

JAIL: The protesters move into their cells, still singing. The men &
women are put in two adjoining cells. Buzz wants a conjugal visit with
Reva. Josh wants a tin cup to bang on the bars. Marcus asks Griff is
this is just like old times. Griff says every jail is different & it's
people, not jails, that deny other people their freedom. Marcus
remembers a news photo of his dad behind bars. It made him scared
because he thought his dad had robbed someone. Griff is sorry about all
the things they missed. Father & son hug.

5TH ST.: Marah isn't sure she should talk to Alan, because her parents
say he's being bad. Alan says they think he's doing something wrong, but
he isn't. It's just a disagreement, and it doesn't make anyone bad. He
asks where Shayne is, and Marah says he's back at the diner. Alan says
he'll take Marah back there too & leaves Amanda in charge of making sure
no one else wanders in. Amanda tells the foreman to start the countdown.

In the condemend building, Shayne has found a cable that he uses as a
whip. He cracks it, pretending to whip Marah. "This is for calling me
names! And this is for calling me stupid!"

CEDARS: Blake reminds Abby to say yes when Rick asks her for coffee,
because it's just a chance to spend time together. Abby goes back to
work as Ross arrives to pick up Blake. The Marlers leave & Rick asks
Abby if he's bossy. She thinks about it. She says he's a doctor & is
used to giving orders. Maybe it's hard to stop. But he's not bossy, he's
confident. "You know what's right for people, mostly." Rick grimaces at
the qualification & would like to talk about this more with Abby. "Do
you have time for some coffee?" The music swells as Abby's eyes light
up. "Coffee?" she asks, grinning hugely. She says she does have time &
would love to have coffee with him. Rick remembers that Abby doesn't
like coffee & offers tea instead. "No, I think I'm going to have coffee
today." Great, says Rick, and they walk off together.

JAIL: Marcus asks what's got Griff down. He's noticed that Gilly is
nowhere in sight, and he could hardly miss Griff & Viv throwing
furniture at each other earlier. Griff asks how much Marcus heard. "Not
much--some machine gun fire, a few grenades, a 7.8 earthquake..." Griff
said he just learned some things that have changed his whole life.

Buzz complains of hunger & asks for lunch. He & Frank argue about the
menu. The guys start chanting for burgers. In the next cell Reva notices
a particularly downhearted protester. The woman explains that her former
home is being demolished today. They had wanted to rebuild. Now it will
never happen. Reva gives her a hug, then stands up & announces that they
are going to fast until Alan stops what he's doing. "Or until Eleni
caters," adds Buzz. Reva is annoyed at his cavalier attitude & reminds
him this is serious business. Buzz insists that he's hungry.

DINER: Eleni is surprised to see Marah walk in with Alan, since she
thought the kids were upstairs. Marah explains why she & Shayne left.
Alan says he found her in an abandoned building. Marah apologizes. Eleni
thanks Alan for bringing her back. Eleni asks where Shayne is. Marah
says he came back earlier. Eleni didn't see him. Marah says he probably
sneaked by, as usual, & is upstairs watching cartoons. Eleni goes to
check on Shayne & tells Marah to thank Alan.

Marah sits in a booth, staring up at Alan. She says he doesn't have 2
heads. Alan smiles & laughs when she explains that Buzz said Alan had 2
faces, but she thinks he'd need 2 heads to have 2 faces. (Ah, irony.)

CEDARS: Abby enthuses that she feels really, really good after her 1st
cup of coffee. Rick tries to apologize for the awful hospital coffee,
but Abby says it was great, she loved it. Rick promises to take her
somewhere with really good coffee next time. "I would love that! I love
having coffee with you, love it!" Rick suggests decaf next time. He asks
if he sounds bossy. She doesn't think so. Rick notices that Abby's ID is
on wrong & fixes it. She smiles up at him as her mother enters in full
Amish garb. "Oh my daughter, you are courting damnation!" she cries.
Abby reacts like a kid caught with her hand in the cookie jar.

JAIL: Marcus wants to know what Griff is holding back. Griff says
they'll talk about it when they have some privacy. Buzz starts yelling
that he wants to make a phone call & everyone else joins in. Nell starts
to give them a hard time, but Josh reminds her that they are entitled to
one phone call each by law. Nell says she'll go check on it. Josh & Reva
hold hands through the bars.

DINER: Eleni runs downstairs, alarmed. Shayne is not upstairs, she tells
Alan & Marah. Alan guesses that Shayne is still at the demolition site.

CONDEMNED BUILDING: Shayne continues to goof around. He hears the call
that the charges are about to be set, and the warning buzzer. Freeze
frame on Shayne's wide-eyed terror as the screen fades to black.
