"Guiding Light" Update for Wednesday, July 17, 1996.
By Patricia K. Lambert

Sorry if it's late, guys!
Here goes:

Spaulding Mansion:
Amanda is scribbling I.R.S. on her note pad while Alan gloats about "A
demolition a day keeps the riff-raff away." Alan tells Amanda to be
happy, she'll be able to pay the I.R.S. with her profits from Advantage
Systems.
Amanda says only if his plan is successful. Alan says he's handled
everything the coalition has handed him and he's prepared to handle
whatever handles next. Picketers break down the door. Griffin tells
Alan it's everyone he's kicked out of their homes on 5th Street and
since he has a front lawn the size of a football field, maybe they'll
just camp out for awhile.

Courthouse:
Cuckoo Roger tries to get Blake to tell the court how she knows that
Dinah and Hart have been working together to make it look like he is
insane. He tells her not to be intimidated by the rest of her family
but just tell the truth as she knows it. Blake looks around the court
room for some sign of what to do. Roger tells the judge how Dinah and
Hart's goal was to rip him of everything, his money, his dignity and
turn him, almost, in a stark raving psychotic. (Almost??????)He pleads
with her to honor her promise to tell the truth. Teary-eyed, Blake
says he is sick and needs to be put away.

Roll Lighthouse.

Roger wants Blake's testimony stricken from the record because it's
obvious she was pressured by his enemies to lie. The judge reminds her
of perjury charges. Roger pleads with Blake. She apologizes and tells
him he's a menace to people and he hurts them and never admits when he
is wrong. Blake says it can't go on like this. Roger calls her a
traitor. Roger says if she doesn't tell the truth that they'll put
him away. He asks if that is what she wants. Blake says she doesn't
hate him but what he's done. Roger asks if Holly put her up to it.
Roger yells at Holly about how she couldn't put him away years ago, so
now she is using Blake to do it now. Ross yells he wants Roger stopped
now. Roger asks Holly if she made Blake feel guilty for having healthy
babies. Someone has to stop Fletcher before he jumps over the banister
to get Roger. The judge tells Roger to stop or he will be held in
contempt. With a sobbing Blake on the stand, Roger almost looks like
he regrets what he is doing. Almost! He begs Chrissy to tell the
truth. Ross asks the judge to excuse Blake and let her testimony
stand. The judge agrees. Ross tells her she did the right thing. She
runs out of the courtroom with Holly behind her. Roger says he's ready
to call his next witness. Leo tells him he's making a mistake. Tea
ry-eyed Roger calls his bastard son to the stand.

Diner:
Eleni yells upstairs for Mary to eat all of the soup and lie down that
she'll watch the kids until Annie gets off duty. Marah and Shayne
want to know why everyone is so upset about the 5th Street thing.
Eleni tells them that their family is helping all the families on 5th
Street to stop this big company trying to tear it down. Marah says it
sounds like something her teacher told her about-like the `60's where
everyone marched and held candles and sang songs and the police
arrested them. Shayne asks if his mommy and daddy are going to jail.

Spaulding Mansion:
Amanda threatens to call the police if everyone isn't gone in 15
minutes. Reva tells her they aren't going anywhere. Alan walks over
and tries to get near a young boy, the mother quickly pulls him away.
Josh says maybe they know how it feels now to have their home invaded.
Griffin says that was how the people of 5th Street felt when Advantage
Systems overran their neighborhood. Amanda says they paid good money
for that slum. Alan says she's right and invading their home will
accomplish nothing. Amanda says she's going to tell the police to
bring their attack dogs. Alan stops her and tells Griffin he's already
said he wanted to be a good neighbor.
Griffin says he just wants a bunch of rich folks living down on the
waterfront drinking cappucino while the people who used to live there
clean their toilets and shine their shoes. Alan reminds Griffin it
isn't Alabama, Chicago or D.C. Griffin says they are going to fight
him like it is.

Cedars:
Vivian walks in as Charles is telling someone on the phone that he is
replacing Ed as Chief of Staff. Charles turns and asks what she wants,
he's busy. Vivian says she hasn't seen him since that awful night when
Gilly found out about her father. Charles says he's been staying at
the Club. Vivian says they have to deal with what's happened. Charles
says he's dealing with it. Vivian says she tried to call David and he
hung up on her.
Gilly must have beat her to him. Charles says he did. It was the one
of the worst moments of his life. Charles asks Vivian if he can blame
Gilly for not talking to her. Thanks to Vivian, her entire life has
been a lie. Vivian has the audacity to tell Charles if HE had been
more honest none of this would have happened. He had to know that
Gilly was Griffin's daughter. Charles breaks a lamp and points to
Vivian telling her not to DARE talk to him about honesty. Charles says
their entire life has been a lie. Vivian asks him not to say that. He
says he forgot how she can't bear to hear the truth. Vivian insists
that she cares for him that's why she didn't tell him about her affair
with Griffin. The affair was a long time ago. Charles says it's not
the affair that bore Gilly its the one she rekindled after he came back
to town.

Spaulding Mansion:
Griffin says they aren't leaving until Alan leaves 5th Street. Marcus
says what Griffin wants, he gets. Josh walks up behind Reva, puts his
hand on her back, and tells Alan to stop his plans and let the people
have their neighborhood back. Josh QUICKLY moves his hand when he
realizes it. Alan says it'll never happen. Buzz tells him to call the
police and have the arrested. Nothing sways public opinion more than
seeing the big guy stick it to the little guy. The press show up and
Alan tells Amanda they are there on his invite. Griffin says that Alan
is a master tactician. The minute they forget that is the minute they
lose 5th Street. Alan is going to show the press the plans for 5th
Street that the well-intended people marching on his home, don't
understand.

Courthouse:
Holly consoles Blake saying it's no fun being on the receiving end of
Roger's rage. Holly says she thought she used to love Roger, but
loving him is not liking yourself. She tells Blake to spare herself
the grief that he'll never be the kind and loving father she wanted him
to be. Blake wants to know why can't he just be normal. Holly says
he's lost it and he knows it. Blake wants to know if they were in the
same courtroom. Holly says he has lost his grip. Holly tells Blake
about how Roger came over a couple of weeks ago looking for reassurance
he wasn't insane. Holly says he's been on the verge his whole life.
She said she told him his temper and resentment of people had made him
dangerous. He needs to be locked away. Holly says the surprising
thing is that it wasn't done years ago. Blake wants to know if she did
the right thing in the courtroom. Holly says absolutely. She doesn't
know what they can do or how long it'll take but he may come out the
man that deserves his daughters love.

Roger wants Hart declared a hostile witness. The judge says since it's
just a hearing it's irrelevant but he will grant some leeway as long as
he doesn't badger his son as he did his daughter. Roger says it isn't
a problem. Roger has Hart tell the court what he's been doing. Hart's
says he went to Canada to do some fly-fishing with a buddy. Roger says
he has actually been conspiring with Dinah to drive him insane.
Starting, he says, with the Chinese insanity mask that he ordered by
impersonating Roger. Roger tells Hart to do his impersonation for the
court. Hart's says he isn't one for mimicking. All he can done is
whinny like a horse. He tells the judge he grew up on a farm. Roger
tells Hart to tell the court how he is responsible for Hart's
grandfather's death and stole the farm from him. Hart says he doesn't
have to, Roger just did. Roger says he's doing it to him again and
he's been after him ever since he met him. Hart says he loved him
until he killed his grandfather then it changed. Hart says it's all
about him sleeping with Dinah. Roger screams that Hart admits he
slept with her. Hart says he's been bent out of shape ever since.
Hart says if he'd known Roger'd flip out like this, he'd never have
pulled a stunt that he hate every minute of doing. Roger says he's had
it out for him ever since he came back to Springfield. Hart reminds
him he brought him back. Leo confirms all of the fancy detectives.
The judge wants to know why. Hart tells him because Roger wanted to
use him to get Peter and when he found out, he was livid. But, Roger
wanted him to forgive and forget and when he didn't, Roger freaked out.
Roger tells Hart he will answer his questions. The judge tells Hart
he's through, unless Ross has any questions. Ross declines. Hart tries
to pat Roger on the shoulder, and Roger gets defensive. The judge says
that will be all. Roger says he has one more witness to call, himself.

Cedars:
Vivian says Griffin had no right to tell Charles anything. He agrees
and says he should have heard it from her. She says she loves him and
didn't want to hurt him. Charles says she never could stand messes.
Everything in their life was so planned out. Charles says she
certainly couldn't handle an old lover coming back to town, a reminder
of their love child. Vivian reminds Charles he must have forgiven her
or he wouldn't have accepted Gilly has his own. Charles says you don't
punish a child for the mother's adultery. Vivian says her affair with
Griffin doesn't change how she feels about him. Charles wants to know
how she feels. She says she loves the life he's provided for her and
the children. He says she doesn't love him they way she loves Griffin.
Vivian says she tried to be a good wife and make a good home. Charles
says he needed, everyone needs, someone who loves the completely and
passionately and doesn't settle for second best. Charles says their
marriage is meaningless, an empty nothing. Vivian says she'll do
anything to get them through this. Charles says he's leaving her.

Courthouse:
Roger says his children perjured themselves but had good reason because
he's been a lousy father. Sometimes parental love isn't enough.
Vanessa and Ross can attest to that. Vanessa gave up Dinah for
adoption and she was raised in a carnival. Ross tried to tame his
grown up wild child and she married him out of spite. He says his
children are filled with it and drove them to do that to him. Leo
coaxes Roger to start at the beginning.
Roger starts with the Union meeting Dinah convinced him he'd
forgotten. And how she'd convinced him in the wee hours of the morning
to go out and that's when he dreamt about Soloman, his best friend he
had to let die for the good of a mission. Point was and is that no one
knew of Soloman except Laura, Hart's mom. Roger realizes that's why
Hart wanted Laura's letters, to get all the details. Roger tells the
court that Laura, (while looking right at Holly he says this) was the
true love of his life and how she suffered disfiguring torture to
protect him. Roger tells Hart he should rot in hell for using his
dead's mother memory and his love for her in such a way. Roger tells
about the scarf too and how Dinah liked it and also insisted it wasn't
wrapped around her neck. Roger says he wants to get to the nitty
gritty about Laurel Falls and how he thought he'd killed Hart. And how
Hart began appearing everywhere. Roger says Hart was giving Elvis a
run for his money. He says he began to get skeptical so he got Dinah
to take him where she had moved the body and there he was in all his
rotting putrid glory. Only it wasn't him, just a dummy corpse.
Finally, the Street Fair when he taps him on the shoulder and asks if
he can cut in. Roger says no one says "May I cut in" anymore. The
judge suggests maybe he should collect his thoughts. Roger says his
thoughts are completely collected. Roger says they want him put away
so they can get his money. The judge says they are wealthy in their
own right. Roger asks if the judge is taking their side. He says he
is just trying to make sense of things. Roger says it's perfect sense
and he's amazed the judge doesn't see it. Roger says the whole town
hates him. Henry called him a yard dog 20 years ago and it still
sticks. He's not good enough to be led into the house. He can't have
his dues. He fought for his country and fought to keep him safe but
the entire town of Springfield hates him and wants him dead. He stabs
his pen into the podium.

Cedars:
Vivian says if Charles hates her that much, then leave her. Charles
says the sad truth is he still loves her. Vivian promises to make
things right and try to be the kind of wife he wants. Charles says she
doesn't love him the way he needs to be loved. She wants to know where
Gilly is, her daughter deserves to know the truth if he won't see her.
Charles says he respects her wishes to stay from her mother. Vivian
says he can't keep her from her daughter. Charles says he doesn't have
to, her lies have already done it. Charles tells her to shut the door
on the way out.

Spaulding Mansion:
Alan promises his plans will breath new life and a new tax base into
Springfield. Josh wants to know about the workers he's putting out of
work. Reva wants to know about the affordable housing and neighborhood
center.
The police show up saying they are responding to a silent alarm. Alan
plays dumb and says someone must have accidentally tripped it. Alan
tells him the people have invaded his home in some type of extortion
attempt. Alan says he's at his wits end he's asked them to leave. The
police tell them they are under arrest and arrests them all.

Courthouse:
Roger apologizes for his outburst and says he's finished, with his
testimony. He will fight his sanity until the end. Ross says Roger
has said it all and won't cross-examine. Roger steps down and says his
story is true and wants to know how long to wait for the ruling. The
judge says he's ready if Roger is.

The judge says the question of mental competency is difficult. Based
on the testimony of witnesses, experts and most of all Roger and
sentences him to the Midland Hills Mental Facility and gives Dinah
control of the money. The judge says if he finds out there was a
conspiracy he will make the responsible party pay, personally. Roger
says he'll go peacefully. Roger tells them to mark the day on their
calendars as the beginning of the end for everyone.

Diner:
Marah and Shayne are watching tv and see that members of the 5th Street
Coalition are being arrested. Marah and Shayne say they have to help
mommy and daddy while Eleni tries to get them to go upstairs and watch
a video with Mary and Marina.

Jail:
Leevy tells the protestors that the Springfield P.D. has better things
to do than arrest all of them (Springfield has such high crime!).
Griffin says if going to jail is what it takes to show the plight of
the people on 5th Street then book `em!

Spaulding Mansion:
Alan tells the maid they can take care of the mess later. Amanda
wants to know why Alan didn't shoot first then do the interview. Alan
wants to know if she is with him. She says their first building bites
the dust in the hour and they'll be there to watch, right? They leave.

Diner:
Shayne says Eleni wants them to go upstairs and watch a video. Marah
says they need to hurry that mommy and daddy need their help.

Jail:
Frank and Cleary walk in as everyone is getting finger printed. Leevy
tells them to go get Alan and tell him to drop the charges so these
people will go home. Josh watches with a smile as Reva and Buzz talk
about her having fire to spare and Buzz can't wait to get her home so
she can scorch him. Vivian walks in looking for Griffin and tells him
he cost her her husband and her daughter and won't let him get away
with it.

Courthouse:
Ross asks Blake if she's okay. She says she was a little wobbly at
first but she's okay now. He should go check on Dinah. Ross says she
has Matt and Vanessa. He take Blake to Cedars to have her checked out.

Dinah thanks Matt and Vanessa for being there. Hart tells her thanks
and that Roger is now where he belongs. Dinah says she wasn't the only
one that put him there. Hart tells her to stay out of his life, now.
She says no problem.

Midland:
Roger is welcomed to his new home. He says that it isn't over yet and
he doesn't know how or when or where but he's going to get each of
them. They can count on that!! Freeze on Roger's face.

Does anyone else feel a little bit sorry for Roger?????
