GUIDING LIGHT UPDATE -- THURSDAY, JULY 11, 1996

                     IT'S NOT FAIR

Written by Roger Newman and directed by John M. O'Connell

Highlights:
* Nell jumps to conclusions but bounces when she hits a rubber corpse.
* Hart & Dinah get maudlin as their plan nears its close.
* Gilly & Charles try to cope with their worlds turned upside-down.
* It's not all fun & games at the fair to save 5th St.

LAUREL FALLS: J yells for someone to come look at the dead body he found
in the cave. Nola comes running back & climbs up to the cave with him.
She takes a look & grimaces.

UNIDENTIFIED ROOF: Hart checks his watch & wonders where Dinah is. She
shows up 10 minutes late & kisses him. He asks her what's happening with
Roger. She says Leo took him back to the penthouse & she's supposed to
be planning a trip around the world for herself & Rog. Hart senses that
she's troubled. He reassures her that in a few hours they will be home
free. She agrees, with little enthusiasm.

CAROUSEL FARM: Children run around screaming while Marcus, Matt & Josh
take care of some last-minute hammering. Annie shows up with Phillip,
who is refusing Annie's entreaties to do something. Josh asks what's
going on.

In the carousel, Reva reads the papers Alan has handed her & says he's
gotten Ross's injunction overturned. Their application for landmark
status has been denied. Alan gloats & asks whether he should tell
everyone, or would Buzz & Reva prefer to do so.

Buzz complains that the injunction was supposed to be at least a 30-day
reprieve. Alan says you can't trust lawyers. The historical society had
no legal grounds for its ruling, as Alan found out with one call to the
state capital. Reva accuses him of paying someone off & tells him to get
out. Alan says demolition begins tomorrow, unless Buzz comes up with the
bucks to pay off the note. Buzz & Reva vow to come up with 3 times the
needed amount, to save not only the diner, but the whole neigborhood.
Alan is skeptical. "You're going to have to take me out of the diner on
a gurney," promises Buzz. "So be it," replies Alan. He exits. Reva is
pissed. Buzz is depressed & says it's time to throw in the dishtowel.
Reva looks determined.

Outside, Phillip tells Josh that Annie is nuts. She's been trying to
flatter Phil into sitting up on the dunking booth platform in nothing
but his swim trunks. Phil opts to help with the hammering instead. He
runs into Alan, who accuses him of joining the enemy camp.

LAUREL FALLS: J & Nola exit the cave. J looks green & worries that Quint
will think he's a wuss. Nola reminds J of a time when a worker on a dig
sliced his leg open & Quint couldn't even look at it & didn't eat for 2
days. (Nola closed the wound with safety pins. Yum!) J gets greener. He
suggests that they should report the body. Nola gets out her cell phone
to call the cops. J hopes the body doesn't belong to anyone they know.

ROOF: Hart asks what's on Dinah's mind. She's been thinking about Henry.
She feels like he's been trying to tell her something. She knows he's
counting on her to do the right thing with her money. Hart says he's had
that feeling too, whenever he writes a big check. Dinah says Hart has
already done good things with his money, like helping out Bridget &
Peter. Hart says there's a lot more money & a lot more to do with it.
They both hope they know what the right thing is when the time comes.

Dinah says the time is almost here. She will have control of Roger's
assets, formerly her assets, as soon as he is committed. Hart asks if
she'll go down to the Caymans herself to get the money. She's not sure--
Ross will tell her what to do. But she's most worried that she's not up
to what's ahead for her. Hart thinks she can do whatever she wants.
Dinah says Hart will be able to go & do whatever he wants now, too. Hart
says he didn't get involved with her scheme just to get back at Rog.

HOLLY'S COTTAGE: Holly is packed to go to the fair & wonders where
Fletch is. She hears someone outside & goes to see if it's Fletch. She
finds Gilly crying & brings her inside. Gilly tells Holly that her
mother did something unbelievable. Holly lets on that she knows. Gilly
gets angry when she realizes Holly has known for weeks that Griffin was
her father, while Gilly has been telling Holly her feelings about Griff.

CEDARS: Charles is packing up his office when Griff knocks & enters.
Griff is surprised to see Charles leaving, even though he gave Charles a
reference for his new job. Charles is not really interested in Griff's
congratulations. Griff notes that he knew nothing about Gilly being his
child. Charles is hurt over losing his little girl, but he doesn't want
Griff's sympathy or pity. He just wants to know if he's also lost his
wife to Griff.

FAIR: Phillip refuses to be labeled as "for" or "against" Alan. He's
just there to enjoy the fair. "What's your excuse?" he wonders. Alan
says he gave some info to Buzz, which Phil will no doubt hear soon.
Also, he has secured $20 million in investments, so he doesn't need
Phil's help anyway. While it would give Alan great pleasure to work with
Phil, he refuses to push. He insists that he loves Phil, but doesn't
know how to make Phil believe that. Phil advises Alan that going after
the diner is beneath Alan & he should get out of it while he still can.
Alan says he'll do what he has to to get what he's after. He hopes Phil
will stay neutral rather than turning against him like AM has. He begs
Phil to return to the family that knows & loves him.

In the carousel, Buzz says the fair can't possibly raise more than a few
thousand dollars. He decides the old run-down neighborhood isn't worth
it. Reva won't let him give up. Buzz is tired of banging his head
against a wall. Reva says he's talking like a loser. Buzz says Reva is
the only good thing that's happened lately. Reva says if Buzz gives up,
he'll be doing it alone. If he walks out on 5th St., she'll walk out of
his life.

Buzz challenges Reva, but she stands her ground. If Buzz isn't the man
she thought he was (passionate, committed, determined & arrogant), then
she's wants out. Buzz objects to "arrogant"; Reva says she was on a roll
& it slipped out. Buzz realizes Reva was just bluffing & says he knew it
all along. Reva claims he did not & says she gave a brilliant
performance. "And the Emmy goes to..." says Buzz, in a little inside
joke (both Deas & Zimmer have won multiple Emmies). Reva asks if Buzz is
still planning to give up. Buzz says he's ready to jump back in the
ring. They joke about doing it on the canvas & wind up kissing.

LAUREL FALLS: Frank & Nell arrive to investigate. They are not in
uniform. J explains how he found the body. Frank & Nell go up to the
cave with Nola to check it out. They agree it's a dead body. Nell thinks
it's Hart, but Frank says all they can tell is that it's a male. He
thinks the body will be very hard to ID. Nell continues theorizing about
Hart. Frank says it looks like a mob hit & Nell should stop jumping to
conclusions. Nell is sure that Roger murdered his own son.

ROOF: Hart says he has a lot of reasons to stay in Springfield. Dinah
knows she can't rely on him forever & says she can take care of herself
& will be fine after Rog is gone. Hart says he wants to stay around for
Peter. "And Bridget," suggests Dinah. Hart doesn't see what Jet has to
do with anything. She's a nice person & a good mother & he has to stay
friendly with her if he wants to see Peter. He doesn't want to make the
same mistakes Rog made with his kids. Dinah knows this & knows it's why
Henry left his money to Hart, because he knew that Hart loved his son &
would only do good for him. Hart will give it his best shot to live up
to this. Dinah says there's something she's been wanting to tell Hart, &
now seems as good a time as any.

Dinah hesitates, then says it's the money--she was thinking of setting
up a trust fund for children, but also wanted to do something more
personal, for Hart. Hart says he has plenty of money & starts rambling.
Dinah tells him to shut up. She isn't planning on giving him any of her
money -- she wants $1 *from* Hart in exchange for the farm. She starts
rambling about all the wonderful things at the farm & what they can do
there. Hart shuts her up with a kiss.

LAUREL FALLS: The medical examiner comes out of the cave & announces
that the "body" is a hunk of plastic--the best special effect he's seen
since "Twister." Nell is in denial & Frank is dumbfounded, as usual.
"You're telling me that you think this body isn't real?" he asks.
"Cool," says J. Nola nudges him to shut up.

CEDARS: Charles doesn't want to be made a fool of any more than he
already has. He accuses Griff & Viv of picking up right where they left
off & can't believe his own naivete, or rather, denial. Deep down, he
knew, but his pride wouldn't let him admit it. He was always so proud of
having the perfect marriage & the perfect wife. Griff says he hated
lying & wanted to tell Charles the truth. Charles remembers when Griff
tried, but Viv shut him down. Griff starts to defend Viv, but Charles
doesn't want to hear it. All he wants to know is whether the affair is
still going on. Griff says he broke it off when he learned that Viv was
in cahoots with Alan. Charles is incensed that Griff was more concerned
about Viv's politics than the fact that she was a married woman, and
doesn't know whether Griff or Viv disgusts him more.

HOLLY: Gilly is outraged that Holly, who is supposed to be her friend,
could have turned her back on Gilly. Holly explains that she was caught
in the middle & urged Viv to tell her the truth. Gilly wishes Holly
would have told her. Holly says that Viv had to be the one to tell her.
She tries to rationalize Viv's holding back, saying she was afraid &
waiting for the right time. Gilly says the right time turned out to be
when she was about to sleep with Griff. She thinks it was terrible for
Viv to put her in that position & that she had a right to know who her
father was. Holly says sometimes people make the wrong choices for the
right reasons; she knows from personal experience. Gilly says it's not
the same thing. Viv has betrayed her entire family & has no excuse.
Gilly turns to go & finds Viv at the door.

Gilly doesn't want to talk to her mom. Holly leaves them alone. Gilly
wonders where, or rather, who Viv slept with last night. Viv says
there's nothing between herself & Griff anymore. Gilly doesn't know what
to believe. Viv knows that what she did was monstrous, but begs Gilly's
forgiveness. Gilly says not to bother wasting either of their time. Viv
admits she was totally wrong & made several bad choices. Gilly thinks
"bad choice" is somewhat of an understatement. Viv cries & begs Gilly
not to shut her out. Gilly refuses. "There is nothing more to be said.
There is nothing more to be done. I lost my father last night. And I
lost my mother as well." Exit Gilly.

FAIR: Buzz gets into the swing of things. Blake & Ross banter over a
barrel of fish. She suggests that the game is rigged. Ross says it's for
a good cause. She tries to bribe him with her wiles.

Shayne & Marah agree that Vanessa is no good at running the shell game.
They keep finding the pea. Buzz climbs up onto the stage & they raise
the fair banner to much applause.

In the carousel, Annie caresses a horse. Before she can take things any
further, Josh enters & asks why she's hiding out in there. She remembers
when they first found the carousel. It was falling apart & dying, but
now it's beautiful & full of energy. Josh looks at her with love & tells
her she's beautiful. She stops his heart. Annie loves Josh too & he
makes her very happy. Josh says he's about to make her even happier &
tells her to hop up onto a horse. He cranks up the carousel for her.

ROOF: Hart says the farm was one of the most important things in his
grandfather's life & in his too. He thinks it's so wonderful that Dinah
is giving it back to him. He thinks he knows more about Dinah than she
knows about herself. He's been studying her & he thinks she's pretty
incredible. "Incredible good or incredible bad?" she asks. Hart says
she's warm & generous & smart, "and most of all, you're the most
incredibly beautiful woman, who I..." "What are you trying to tell me?"
asks Dinah softly.

CEDARS: Charles says he's busy & shows Griff the door. Gilly is on the
other side. She asks Griff what he's doing there. Griff says he came to
speak to Charles, but would like to speak to her as well. "Of course,"
says Gilly, diminished somehow. "Whenever you're ready," says Griff.
Gilly says not today. She needs to be with Charles today. Charles closes
the door behind Griff. He promises Gilly that they will get through
this. "I love you, Daddy," she tells him. "No more than I love you," he
replies. They hug. [Pause while the updater sniffs back her tears.]

LAUREL FALLS: Frank & Nell walk through the woods together as Nell
morosely predicts that J & Nola will spread the word of their rubber
corpse to half the town at the fair. Frank thinks this is good, because
all the talk might lead someone to give himself or herself away. The ME
says he's taking the "body" to the morgue for further study & asks if
they have any idea what's going on. Frank has no clue (as usual), but
intends to find out.

ROOF: Hart says they should finish their conversation later, after the
fair. He kisses her & she agrees. Hart leaves & Dinah stares out at
Springfield.

FAIR: Buzz plays emcee & announces a dance auction. Anyone can bid to
dance with anyone else. Shayne bids $100 for Annie. Matt bids $200 for
Vanessa. Ross bids $250 for the "stunningly pregnant" Blake. Somehow the
bid gets doubled to $500 & Buzz starts to call, "Going, going...." Alan
steps up & bids $1000 for Reva. Cut to Josh, then Buzz, then freeze on
Reva as the screen fades to black.
