(Thursday) >>Bill opens the door and looks down the hall. >>Bill: Mom's not home yet, but I guess if we sneak out the window we'll be okay. >>Ben: (looking in the mirror) How do I look? >>Bill: (Impatiently) Like you always do. Come on, we better get going. >>Ben: You think Michelle will be there? She said she'd try to come. >>Bill: I could care less what she does anymore. >>Ben: If you could care less then why do you get so upset every time I mention her name?. >>Bill: Because Michelle used to be great but after she went to Europe and....then AJ came to town....and >>now she's turned into this tremendous jerk. >>Ben (glancing at Bill) You wouldn't be a teensy bit jealous, would you?? >>Bill: (vehemently) I'm not jealous!! >>Ben: (giving Bill a look) Okay, so you're not jealous. You're not wearing that are you? >>Bill: What's wrong with it? >>Ben: You look like a high school kid. >>Bill: So, I AM a high school kid. >>Ben: (rolling his eyes) Hey, fake ids only work if you work with them. You have to look the part. >>Bill: Since when are you such a great expert? >>Ben: If you want to risk it... >>Bill: I'll risk it. Let's go. >>The boys open the window and climb out. >> >>Scene II Midnight, Matt and Van's room >>Matt sits on the bed watching TV. Enter Vanessa, tiptoeing, in a red velvet evening dress. >>Van: Oh, you're still awake! >>Matt: (quietly fuming) Yeah. So you finally made it home. >>Van: I'm afraid dinner ran a little late. You know how business dinners can be. >>Matt: (in a hostile tone) No, I'm afraid I don't. Since when do business dinners last till the wee hours of >>the morning? And why are you dressed like that? It's hardly business attire. >>Van:(flatly) You're mad. (Matt turns away from her). Look, we had dinner at the Towers. That's why I'm >>dressed like this. I'm sorry I got home but it was a very important dinner, and we managed to accomplish >>a great deal. >>Matt: I take it you seduced Forrester into signing the contract. >>Van: (icily) Seduced? >>Matt: You were all over him at the office this morning. >>Van: He's a very important client. >>Matt: I'm sure he is. >>Van: If you're mad at me I wish you'd be up front about it instead of making nasty innuendoes. >>Matt: (getting up from the bed, heading for the door.) Believe me, you don't want to hear anything I have >>to say to you right now. (He walks out the door slamming it behind him). >>Van sighs and sinks down on the bed. >> >>Scene III The Roadhouse One a.m. >> Bill and Ben sit at a table. Ben has made eye contact with a girl across the room. The boys try to order >>drinks from the waitress, who cards them and refuses to serve anything but soda. The girl watches, >>amused. >>Ben: Geeze, tell me that girl isn't laughing at me. >>Bill: She isn't laughing at you. >>Ben (peeking) She is too. What happened to the girl you were dancing with? >>Bill: She said I'm cute but she doesn't date high school boys. >>Ben: So, why didn't you tell her about your mom and step-dad. You know, age doesn't matter, and all >>that sort of thing. >>Bill: Oh, yeah, like that would really help. Give me a break. >>Ben: Uhh, speaking of your step-dad.....duck, now!!! >>Matt appears in the doorway, goes straight to the bar and orders a drink. While his back is turned the >>boys sneak through the crowd and hide in the men's room. >>Bill: (panting, leaning against the wall). This is just great! If Matt sees me here, he'll tell Mom and I'll be >>grounded for life. >>Ben: What's he doing here at one o'clock in the morning without your mom? >>Bill: I don't know. Maybe he couldn't sleep? >>Ben: (cynically) Or maybe he's looking for a little action. >>Bill: (looking upset) Hey, Matt can be a royal jerk sometimes, but he's not like that. >>Ben: Well, I think we should stick around and make sure he behaves. >>Bill: I vote to leave right now. >>Ben:(firmly) We're staying. (peeking out the door) We don't really have much choice. There's only one >>way out of here and we have to pass Matt to get there. >>Closeup of Bill looking resigned. >> >>Scene IV Roadhouse >>Matt broods at the bar while the boys watch. He goes over to the pinball machine and watches two guys >>playing. Bill suddenly makes a break for the door. Ben follows him, then, as he sees Matt start to turn >>around, he pulls Bill behind the bar and pushes him down out of sight. The boys huddle on the floor >>behind the bar; when they peek out Matt is heading for the men's room. >>Bartender to the boys: What are you doing? >>Ben: It's just a little practical joke. Pretend we're not here. >>The bartender starts to protest but Bill hands him a fifty-dollar bill. >>Bartender: Okay, just don't make any trouble or I'll throw you out. >>Ben: Don't worry. You won't even hear us. Bill, he's coming! >>The boys dive behind the bar, Matt returns to his seat at the bar. Amanda enters and slides onto the >>seat next to him. >>A: Well, look who's here. >>M: Oh, hi. >>A: So where's your wife? >>M: Do you mind? I'd really like to be alone. >>A: Aha, so you've had a fight. >>M: (getting up and heading for the door) It's been nice talking to you. >>A: Oh, don't go. (reaches out and grabs his arm) Come on, I just had a fight with my brother. So I know >>how you feel. Let me buy you a drink, for old time's sake. >>Matt scowls, shrugs his shoulders, then sits down again. >>A: So what were you fighting about? >>M: Look, if you want to talk, talk about yourself. I don't want to discuss my private life with you. >>A: Okay, okay, Sorry if I ruffled your feathers. I don't remember you being this tense and hostile back in >>the old days. (shot of the boys hiding behind the bar, all ears) >>M: Lets not talk about the old days either, okay. >>A: Come on, you don't have to be such a bear. I'm just trying to be friendly. >>M: I could do without your kind of friendship. >>A: Now I'm hurt. What, do you look down on me because of my past? You're not any better than me, you >>know. You worked for Joey too. And you engaged in certain other activities that I never did get involved >>with. >>M: You didn't have to. Your family had money. >>A: Oh, don't give me that. I was having money problems, and Joey's money was easy money. Just don't >>try to tell me YOU had no choice. You could have found other, more legitimate means of supporting >>yourself. But you wanted the easy money, too. I know you did. >>M: Whatever happened to Frangionne, anyway? >>A: He got into some trouble with the law and left the country. I didn't go with him. >>M: Wise choice. >>Amanda is silent, pushing her glass around: So, tell me, do you look down on me? >>M: Everyone has done things in their past that they wish they could do over. I know I have. >>(shot of boys, by now Bill is looking upset) >>A: But you don't like me, do you? >>M: I'm not sure you care about anyone but yourself. >>A: That's a cold thing to say. >>M: I'm just telling you how I feel. >>A: I suppose your wife has been poisoning your mind against me. >>M: I make my own decisions about people. But I've never trusted you, not back in Malibu, not when you >>showed up in Springfield and started going after Ross. >>A: You are so self-righteous!!! When I think of the Matt I knew in Malibu....You have no right to judge >>me. >>M: Well, things have changed. What's important to me has changed. Money doesn't matter to me now >>the way it used to. >>A: (laughing) He says, now that he's safely married to a very very rich woman. Strange how you always >>gravitate toward rich, older women. Maybe you haven't changed as much as you think. >>Matt (scowling into his drink): I have changed. But I don't think you have. >>A: If I were you I'd try to be a little more friendly. After all, I know things about you that you wouldn't >>want spread around town. >>M: I can say the same about you. >>They stare one another down in a moment of high tension. >>M: Lets agree to let the past remain in the past, okay. >>A: Okay by me. (Raises her glass mockingly in a toast) >>Matt nods at her, then gets up and leaves the Roadhouse. >>Behind the bar, the boys stare at one another wordlessly as they wait for Amanda to leave. >> >>Scene V Bill's Room >>The boys climb in the window, trying to be quiet. >>Ben: So Matt and Amanda knew one another in Malibu, and they were involved in something they'd >>rather forget. What do you think it is? >>Bill: (looking troubled) I don't know. But it sounds bad. >>Ben: Are you going to tell your mom? >>Bill: Tell her what? We don't really know anything definite, just a conversation we overheard when we >>were somewhere we weren't supposed to be. I need to find out more, maybe set a trap for him. >>Ben: A trap? You mean to prove if he's hiding anything? >>Bill: Yeah, I guess. Cause if he is I want him out ofmy mother's life. >>Ben: Maybe we should try to find out more about this Joey she mentioned. And the Frangionne guy. It >>sounds like he's some kind of criminal. She said something about her and Matt working for him. Maybe >>they were drug dealers. >>Bill: (shaking his head) I don't know, that's hard to believe. >>Ben: It had to be something pretty bad. They talked like they really didn't want anyone to know. >>Bill: (resolutely) All I know is I'm going to find out what it is. >>Ben: Well, you can count me in! This is exciting!! >>Bill: Don't looks so pleased. If this is true it's going to kill my mom. >> >>Scene VI Carriage House, late Friday afternoon >>Blake, in a red teddy, lights candles in the living room, checks the time, then sits down to do her nails. >>Knock at the door. >>Blake jumps up excitedly, then slinks seductively toward the door. >>She opens the door to Ben and Bill. They all stare at one another for a moment. >>Blake: (stammering with embarrassment) Just a minute. >>She closes the door behind her, runs to put her robe on, reopens the door, and invites the boys to come >>in. >>Blake: I'm sorry, you just caught me a little by surprise--I was taking a nap. >>Ben: (with an enormous grin) Good thing we stopped by, looks like you almost set the house on fire. (He >>waves away candle smoke) >>Blake gives him a look. >>Blake: So, sit down. (concerned) Is something wrong with Mom and the baby? >>Ben: No, they're fine. But we have something we want to ask you about. >>Blake: Okay, shoot. >>Ben: Well, you used to work for Frank at his detective agency, right? >>Blake: That's right. >>Ben: Well, we need to know some things about detective work. Like how do you trace a person?. >>Blake (suspiciously): Why do you need to know this? >>Ben: It's for school. We have to do a report for Career Day. >>Blake: Well, in that case, why don't I tell you about fun stuff like disguises and stakeouts. >>Bill: We're more interested in how detectives track people down. You know, like Roger tracked down >>Hart. >>Blake: Does this have something to do with Hart?? >>Ben: (indignantly) No, of course not. It's for school. >>Blake: Well, if you want to know the truth, detective work can be pretty tedious, especially stakeouts. >>You just sit there for hours and usually nothing happens. It's not as glamorous as you'd think. >>Ben: What other kind of stuff do detectives do? >>Blake: Oh, a lot of it is, like you said, tracking people down. That can be tedious, too. Some of it can be >>done through the computer but a lot is just old-fashioned leg-work. >>Bill: Have you ever used any electronic surveillance equipment? >>Blake: You mean like a video camera? Yeah, we did some of that at the agency, and also some >>wiretapping. >>Ben: You know how to tap phones? >>Blake: Well, yes, but you need to be up on all the laws concerning wiretapping, or you're liable to be >>sued for invasion of privacy. I know, Ross has lectured me on the subject ad nauseum. Which >>reminds me, I actually, have some wiretapping equipment here at the house. >>Ben: Really? Could we see it? >>Blake: Sure, why not? >>Cut to all three entering basement. Blake opens box in corner. >>Blake: Yeah, it's all here. (to Bill) Last time I used it was on your sister Dinah. >>Bill: Really? >>Blake: Yeah. Ross wasn't exactly pleased. (she winces at the memory) >>Ben: (looking the equipment over carefully) Wow, this is cool. Do you think we could take it to school >>for our report? >>Blake: (looking uneasy) Well, I don't know. >>Bill: Why not. It's what real detectives use, right? I bet we could get a phone set up and tap it right >>there in class so everyone could see it working. >>Ben (enthusiastically) Wow, that would be totally cool! We'd be sure to get A's. Can we please borrow it, >>Blake? >>Blake( looking hesitant) If I say yes will you promise not to use it to get into any trouble? >>Boys: Sure, of course. We promise. >>Blake: Okay, you can take it. But be careful, and I want it back. I may need it someday, in case any >>of my kids turn out like their big sister Dinah (she laughs ruefully). >>Bill:(shocked) You wouldn't really tap your own kid's phone lines would you? >>Blake: Who knows what a desperate mother will do. Hopefully it won't come to that, though. Gosh, >>lighten up, guys! I'm not the enemy here. Remember, I'm the one who's loaning you this equipment so >>you can get an A on your report. >>Bill: You are. And we're very grateful. Now we better get going. I mean, it looks like you have plans for >>this evening. (he grins) >>Blake: You're right, I do have plans, very important plans that are none of your business. (She smiles >>impudently at them). >> >>Scene VII Chamberlain-Reardon home, Friday afternoon >>Vanessa is sitting on the living room floor, dressed in jeans, playing with Peter by the Christmas tree. >>Matt enters, looking really bummed out. He is surprised to see her there. >>Matt: You're home early. >>Van: Well, I felt that since I barely made it home last night I could afford to leave early today. And I >>wanted to spend some time with Peter before Hart comes to pick him up. >>Matt: Oh, I forgot Hart has him for the weekend. >>Van nods and hands Peter a puzzle piece. Matt walks into the living room and kneels down by them. >>Matt: I'm sorry about last night. I was way out of line. I just lost it. I promise it won't happen again. >>Van: (soberly) You're right, you were out of line. I was just doing my job. That's all. >>Matt: I know, I just get frustrated sometimes. It seems like you're always busy. I feel like I never see you >>anymore. >>Van: I have been very busy lately, but things should calm down next month after the shareholder's >>meeting. I'm afraid that's one of the drawbacks of running a major corporation. >>Matt: I know how important your job is to you. You're good at it, and I'm proud of you. But your job has >>been taking so much of your time lately, and the kids take up most of the rest....Sometimes I feel like I'm >>being shoved further and further to the bottom of your pile of "things to do." >>Van: (Looking upset) No, no..Never that...Matt, you're not even on my list of "things to do." >>Matt: Why am I not surprised to hear you say that? >>Van: Matt, what I mean is you're not a "thing to do," you're the man I love and I don't need to put you >>on a list to remember you. I know we haven't been spending much time together, but I think about you >>all the time, I really do. Like last night, in the middle of that boring business dinner that I thought would >>never end--I kept thinking about you, about what you were doing, wishing I were at home with you..... >>Matt: (looking at her intently) Is that really what you were thinking last night? >>Van: (softly) Yes. >>Matt: Then I really acted like a real jerk last night. I wished you'd said something last night--but I guess I >>didn't give you much chance. Can you forgive me? >>Van nods solemnly, with a small smile. >>Matt: Are you sure? (she nods again, then impulsively moves toward him, slips her arms around his neck, >>and buries her head in his shoulder. He takes her in his arms and kisses her tenderly, then more >>passionately. Peter finishes his puzzle and tugs on Vanessa's sleeve, looking for approval. >>Peter: See, mommy!! All done!! >>Matt and Vanessa laugh and hug Peter. Bill walks in the front door with Hart. >>Bill: Mom, Hart's here! (He gives Matt a black look) >>Van: (a little tense) Hi Hart! Peter's things are ready. Here's his bag. He's looking forward to his >>sleepover. >>Hart: (taking Peter) Hey, Peter. Ready to go? >>Peter: (smiling at Hart) Hi (to Vanessa) My monkey! Where's my monkey? >>Van: I packed him in your bag. (to Hart) He sleeps with his monkey. >>Hart: Well, we'll make sure we unpack before bedtime, then. >>Van (smiles): Okay Peter, have lots of fun with Hart. I love you. >>Van and Matt kiss Peter, then Hart says goodbye and leaves with Peter. >>Matt to Van: Are you okay? >>Van: (bravely) I'm okay. He really loves Peter, you know. >>Matt: (trying to distract her) So, tell me, what are your plans for this evening? >>Van: Actually, I don't have any. >>Matt:(pulling her into his arms) Well, you do now. >>Bill rolls his eyes, scowls at Matt, and stalks up the stairs. Van watches him, surprised at his behavior, >>then, as Matt pulls her onto the couch, she forgets to wonder what's wrong with Bill. >> >>Scene VIII Springfield Public Library Reference Room (Friday night) >>Bill and Ben are sitting in front of a microfilm machine, with a pile microfilm boxes around them. >>Ben: Man, this is the lamest idea you've ever had. I'm wasting my whole Friday night to look for some >>clue about this Frangionne guy and we're getting nowhere. And the library closes in less than half an >>hour. >>Bill: Just keep looking, okay? I'm not giving up. If there's something here, I'm going to fine it. >>Ben: (sighing) Why do I let you get me into these things. >>Bill: (stopping the microfilm reel suddenly and pointing at the screen) Hold on, I think I've got something! >>(He brings the article into focus) >>Ben: (reading) Frangionne Sought by Police. (pause) Hey, he killed someone!! >>Bill: He killed someone? Is it our Frangionne? >>Ben: Joseph Frangionne, 46, of Los Angeles. Sounds like our guy. So Joey and Frangione are probably >>the same person!! >>Bill: ( leaning over the microfilm machine) He was indicted on one charge of murder in the first >>degree....wow, he knifed this guy who worked for him. >>Bill: He was also charged with running an illegal gambling operation. "Frangionne is suspected of having >>ties with the mob. Police sources say he has been involved in other illegal activities, although he has >>not been charged at this time." >>Ben: Hmmm, so if Matt and Amanda worked for him, what did they do? Run a gambling operation? >>Bill: Maybe, or something worse. I wish the article said more. >>Ben: So, where do you suppose Frangionne is now? >>Bill: Who cares. I just want to find out what Matt and Amanda were doing back then. >>Ben: Well, I think we've found all we're going to find here. What do we do next? >> >>Scene IX Bill's room, Saturday afternoon >>Bill types at the computer while the printer prints out furiously. There is a knock at the door and Bill >>jumps guiltily. He starts to gather up his papers. >>Bill: Who's there? >>Ben: It's me. >>Bill: (relieved) Oh, come on in. Gosh, you scared me! I thought you were my mom or Matt. >>Ben: What's all this? (He picks up a couple of pages and scans them quickly) >>Bill: Well, last night I couldn't sleep and I was thinking....and finally I figured out what to do. >>Ben: (reading from page) Amanda, We have to talk. It's about Malibu. Meet me at the Lewis Construction >>shed on Weston Street at 11:30 p.m. tonight. Matt >>Ben: (raising his eyebrows) What exactly do you plan to do with this note? >>Bill: It's simple. I have another note just like it for Matt, only it's signed by Amanda. They get the notes, >>show up at the construction shed, and we're there, hiding, to hear what they say. >>Ben: What if they don't show up? >>Bill: I didn't say it's a perfect plan, but it won't hurt to try. Look, I sneaked a cancelled check out of >>Matt's bank statement, and I've been practicing his signature. How's that? >>Ben: Well, if you decide not to be an oil tycoon, you can go into forgery. >>Bill: Now we just need Amanda's signature. >>Ben: Oh, lets just scribble it out. Matt won't notice. >>Bill: It has to look real, we can't afford to make him suspicious. So your assignment is to get a copy of >>Amanda's signature and copy it onto this note. >>Ben: It sounds to me like I have the hard part. >>Bill: Hey, I came up with the idea. I'd do the Amanda part, but I don't have your "in" with the >>Spauldings. I'd say it's time for you to pay Alex a visit. >>Ben: (sighing) Okay, but you'd better come with me. Someone is going to have to distract Alex while I >>take care of the letter. >>Bill: No problem. I can handle Ms. Spaulding. You just concentrate on the letter. >>Ben: I still have the wiretapping stuff hidden under my bed. Have you figured out how to use it? >>Bill: Why do I have to come up with all the ideas around here? >>Ben: Cause you're the idea man in this partnership. >>Bill: Oh, and what are you? >>Ben: (grinning) The action man. >>Bill: Well good, cause I want you to bring the wiretapping stuff over here early tomorrow morning before >>anyone is awake. We can hide it here in my room until we need it. >>Ben: And when will that be? >>Bill: (looking grim) Soon. >> >>Scene X Spaulding Mansion, late Saturday afternoon >> Alex greets the boys. >>Alex: Ben, Bill! What a lovely surprise. To what do I owe the honor of this visit? >>Ben: (smiling) We just thought we'd come by and see you. We haven't seen you in a while. >>Alex: Yes, it has been a while, hasn't it? Can you stay for dinner? >>Ben: That's okay, we just stopped by for a chat. >>Alex: (like a birddog on point) Is something going on that I should know about? Is your father okay? And >>Holly and the baby? >>Ben: Oh, they're fine. I'm just kind of tired of hearing pregnancy stuff all the time. >>Alex: (greatly amused) Ha! Well, that will all be over soon enough and then you'll be hearing baby talk >>instead. (She roars with laughter) Must be rather tiresome for you. >>Bill: Ms. Spaulding. You know, I was wondering if you might give me a tour of the greenhouse. I haven't >>seen it since my mother's wedding. It's full of such beautiful plants. I'd really love to see it again. >>Alex (smiling brightly, tilting her chin toward the ceiling): Oh, I didn't know you were interested in >>horticulture. >>Bill looks blank. >>Ben: Oh, Bill's very interested in horticulture, and all sorts of plant life. Aren't you, Bill? It's a very recent >>interest though. I've already seen the greenhouse so why don't you two go along and I'll stay here and >>watch the game on TV. >>Alex: (interested) Oh, there's a game on? (Ben nods yes) Bill, are you sure you wouldn't rather watch the >>game? >>Bill: Oh, I can watch basketball anytime. It's not often I get a personal tour of the Spaulding >>greenhouse, conducted by Alexandra Spaulding herself. >>Alex: Well, I must confess I'm rather surprised that you're so interested in plants....Voice trails off as >>she and Bill exit the room. >>As soon as they are gone Ben quickly heads for the desk and rifles it. He finds something with Amanda's >>signature on it, sits down, and painstakingly copies it. He examines his handiwork critically and decides >>it will do, folds the note, and sticks it under his shirt quickly as there is a sound at the door and AM >>enters, followed by Dinah. >>AM: Oh, hi Ben, have you seen Alex? >>Ben: She's showing Bill around the greenhouse ( folds his arms over his stomach to hide the note). >>Dinah: Poor Bill, we should go rescue him. >>Amanda appears. She and AM regard one another coolly. >>A: What are YOU doing here? (looking at AM) >>AM: We're having dinner with Aunt Alex. >>Dinah and Amanda stare at one another with open dislike. >>A: Well, I guess I'll be dining out then. (She turns and leaves the room) >>Dinah: How rude!! >>Alex and Bill appear. Bill is carrying a plant. >>Alex: Alan Michael!! I'm so glad you could come to dinner. (Her tone changes to one of polite >>displeasure) And you brought Dinah! >>Dinah: (coolly) It's so nice to be here. >>Alex takes AM aside for a little confab. >>Dinah: Hey little brother! What's this? (She flicks the leaves of the plant) >>Bill: Alex gave it to me. It's a very rare plant. >>Dinah: (raising her eyebrows) How nice of her. Just what every teenaged boy wants. What are you doing >>here? >>Ben: We stopped by to see Alex. >>Dinah: What, trying to hit her up for a loan? >>Bill: Dinah, everything doesn't have to do with money. >>Dinah: Oh no?? >>Bill: (visibly upset) No, it doesn't. Other things are more important, like your family, and protecting the >>people you love. >>He turns and runs out; Dinah stares after him, unable to understand his outburst. >> >>Scene XI Lewis Construction Site 11:00 p.m. Sunday night >>The boys creep through the darkness, up to the shed. Ben tries the door. >>Ben: It's locked. We'll have to break in. >>Bill (holds out a key, grinning): It helps to live in the same house as the foreman. >>He unlocks the door and they enter the dark shed. Moonlight spills in through the windows. >>Ben: (nervously) Where are we going to hide? >>Bill: Under the desk. >>Ben (peers under the desk): There's just one problem. I don't think we're both going to fit under there. >>Bill unlocks the window and crawls out. Ben watches in consternation, looking at his watch, obviously >>worried, until Bill returns. >>Ben: Where did you go? >>Bill: I went out to lock the front door, so they wouldn't know we were here. >>Ben: (grinning) You know, you're very good at this intrigue stuff. >>Bill: (crawling under the desk) Move over. (Complaining, Ben moves.) >>At the sound of a key in the lock they hurriedly finish squeezing under the desk, looking scared but >>excited. >>Matt enters the room, turns on the space heater, and warms his hands in front of it. He paces nervously, >>then sits down on top of the desk, under which the boys are hiding. >>To be continued....... >> >>Author's note: >>This month ends with a cliffhanger as the story was too long and I had to divide it up, that is why Folly, >>Ross, and Marcus have not yet appeared although they are listed in the opening credits:) They will be in >>next month's story: Bill and Ben's Unprecedented Imbroglio Part 2. >> >>
